Which Roofing Sheet Is Best for Sri Lanka's Climate?

Ask five people in Sri Lanka which roofing sheet is best and you will hear five brand names. The honest answer: the brand matters less than the specification underneath it. Two sheets can look identical while lasting very different lifespans in our sun, salt air and monsoon rain.

The specification that matters most: the coating

Quality roofing sheets in Sri Lanka are zinc-aluminium alloy coated steel (often marketed by brand names like Amano). The coating is what fights corrosion. Check the coating class: AZ150 means 150 grams of coating per square metre — noticeably more protection than the AZ70 sheets that float around the lower end of the market. For coastal sites from Negombo to Galle, never drop below AZ150.

Thickness: what the numbers mean

Sheets commonly range from 0.18 mm to 0.47 mm. Thicker sheets resist wind uplift, walkable maintenance and hail-like battering from branches. For homes, 0.30–0.35 mm is a practical balance; for industrial sheds, go heavier. If a price looks too good, the first place a manufacturer saves is the microns.

Beating the heat

Metal sheets conduct heat — no way around physics. What you can do:

  • Choose lighter colours — they reflect noticeably more solar gain than dark sheets.
  • Add a ceiling with an air gap or insulation foil under the sheet; this does more for indoor temperature than any sheet brand change.
  • Ventilate the ridge so hot air can escape the roof cavity.
  • For factories and halls, insulated sandwich panels are the premium answer where indoor temperature genuinely matters.

Roof pitch and overlaps

Corrugated and trapezoidal profiles each have a minimum pitch. Too flat, and wind-driven rain creeps up the laps. Follow the profile's specified minimum slope and use the correct lap (one corrugation minimum for side laps) — most "leaking roofs" are pitch and laps, not the sheet itself.

Our practical recommendation

For a Sri Lankan home: a branded zinc-aluminium sheet, AZ150, 0.30 mm or better, in a light colour, with a ventilated ceiling underneath. Seegaan stocks genuine Amano roofing and quality alternatives in every thickness — see the roofing range or call +94 11 239 6384 for per-sheet pricing.
